shanklin - Isle of wight
Shanklin is situated at the south east end of the Isle of Wight. Shanklin shares its bay with Sandown but although it has all the seaside resort amenities it has a quieter ambiance about it. Shanklin is made up of three parts - the seafront, the shops, and the 'Olde Village'. The seafront can be reached by a lift in the steep cliffs and offers a sandy beach bordered to the south by the Fisherman's Cottage, a lovely thatched pub on the beach and nearby Shanklin Chine.
There are many walks around Shanklin with paths climbing St Boniface Down to Ventnor and Wroxall. There is also an undercliff path to Sandown beside the beach. The town is well served by a railway line that connects to a ferry termination at the top of Ryde Peir.
Shanklin has two main streets for shopping - The High Street and Regent Street. Shanklin is a very popular destination for family holiday makers because of its safe large sandy beach and clear waters. Next to the beach is a pitch and putt, children’s amusements and car parking. In the Old Village of Shanklin there are several good pubs which provide great food and lively evening entertainment.
Shanklin beach activities cater for all tastes with the Town's amenities close by. The beach is well served by Longshoreman providing traditional and modern leisure pursuits. Shanklin centre is only a short walk away from the seafront. Safety is important and Lifeguards are on patrol to watch over the shore and to help make your visit as relaxing and enjoyable as possible. Shanklin is a popular site for water sports of all kinds and you can be sure to either take part or just watch the local enthusiasts having safe fun.Since 1996 Shanklin has not only been able to fly the Seaside Award Flag but has also been successful in displaying its Water Quality award.
Shanklin also houses the Shanklin Chine which is a deep gorge carved out by a stream. This is a very peaceful and picturesque place
to spend the morning or afternoon. In the evening the waterfalls and woodland are illuminated, giving the gardens a totally different
aspect and atmosphere.
